Lares Trek via Pumahuanca (4 Days) | Hot Springs & Circuit 2 | Kusa Treks
The Sacred Valley Route. Hike the Pumahuanca Valley, soak in Hot Springs, and explore the Citadel.

A Smarter Way to Experience the Inca Trail
While most tourists crowd the standard Lares trail, the Pumahuanca Route remains one of the Sacred Valley's best-kept secrets. This 4-day expedition takes you deep into the lush Pumahuanca canyon, home to ancient Polylepis (Queuña) forests and crystal-clear rivers.
You will climb high mountain passes, descend into indigenous weaver villages like Cuncani, and—best of all—finish your trek with a rewarding soak in the Lares Hot Springs on Day 3.
The adventure culminates on Day 4 with a comprehensive guided tour of Machu Picchu (Circuit 2), ensuring you get the classic postcard view and access to the main temples.

Kusa Difference
The "Earn Your Soak" Strategy: Standard tours start at the hot springs. We think that’s backward. On the Pumahuanca route, you finish the trek at the Lares Hot Springs on Day 3. Soaking your tired muscles in volcanic water after hiking 30km is an experience you will never forget.
Biodiversity & Solitude: The Pumahuanca valley is famous for its native Chachacomo and Queuña forests and lack of crowds. You are more likely to see Viscachas (Andean rabbits) and Condors here than other tourists.
Circuit 2 Guarantee: Many budget agencies book cheaper circuits (Circuit 3 or 4) that miss the classic photo spot. We guarantee Circuit 2, which covers the upper platform for the iconic photo and the full historical tour of the citadel.
Why Book With Kusa Treks?
Cultural Connection: We camp near the community of Cuncani, giving you a chance to interact with local families who still wear traditional red ponchos and weave by hand.
Full Service Camping: Our team of horses carries everything. You arrive at camp to set-up tents, hot tea, and a chef preparing a 3-course dinner.
Hotel Comfort: After the trek, we include a night in a 3-Star Hotel in Aguas Calientes so you can shower and sleep in a bed before exploring Machu Picchu.
Permits Notice
No Trek Permits Required.
Unlike the Inca Trail, the Lares Trek path is always open. However, Machu Picchu Entry Tickets do sell out weeks in advance. We recommend booking at least 2 months ahead to secure the 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM entry slots.
