What Is Choquequirao?
Choquequirao is one of the most important archaeological sites left by the Inca civilization. Its name comes from the Quechua words chuqi (gold) and k'iraw (cradle), often translated as "Cradle of Gold."
Historians believe it served as an important ceremonial, administrative, and agricultural center during the final years of the Inca Empire. Even today, archaeologists continue uncovering new sectors of the complex, while much of it remains protected beneath the cloud forest.
For me, that's part of what makes Choquequirao so fascinating. Every visit reminds me that the Andes still hold stories waiting to be discovered.

During the rainy season, the mountains become greener and the landscapes feel even more vibrant. The trail can be more demanding, but many travelers enjoy the quieter atmosphere and dramatic scenery.
No matter when you visit, the Andes always deserve respect. Mountain weather can change quickly, so being well prepared is just as important as choosing the right season.
