Empowering Women in Chinchero: How Kusa Treks Supports Local Artisans

At Kusa Treks, our mission extends beyond guiding travelers through breathtaking landscapes—we are deeply committed to uplifting the communities we work with. One of our most meaningful initiatives is our partnership with a village in Chinchero, where we help local women create and sell handmade goods as a sustainable source of income.

A Village Rich in Tradition

Nestled in the Sacred Valley of Peru, Chinchero is a village renowned for its rich cultural heritage and stunning Andean landscapes. But beyond its picturesque beauty lies a community of talented artisans—women who have spent generations perfecting the art of weaving, knitting, and crafting unique handmade goods. However, limited access to markets and economic opportunities has made it difficult for them to turn their skills into a reliable livelihood.

Kusa Treks’ Commitment to Sustainable Change

Understanding the economic challenges faced by the women of Chinchero, Kusa Treks has taken an active role in supporting these artisans through a multi-faceted approach that prioritizes sustainability, fair trade, and cultural preservation. Our goal is not only to provide short-term financial relief but also to create long-lasting opportunities for economic independence.

Providing Materials and Training – We work with the women of Chinchero by supplying high-quality materials for weaving and crafting, ensuring they have the resources needed to create authentic, high-value products. Additionally, we facilitate workshops on business management, pricing, and marketing to help them expand their sales beyond their village.

Creating a Marketplace for Their Goods – We actively promote their handmade textiles, jewelry, and crafts to travelers who book our treks. Many of our trekking groups visit the village, where they can meet the artisans, learn about traditional weaving techniques, and purchase directly from them. This not only supports the local economy but also helps travelers take home truly meaningful souvenirs.

Ensuring Fair Wages and Ethical Practices – Unlike mass-produced goods found in tourist markets, the products from Chinchero’s artisans are entirely handmade using traditional methods. By working directly with these women, we ensure they receive fair prices for their work, empowering them to support their families and invest in their community’s future.

Why This Matters

Tourism has the power to be a force for good when approached with sustainability and ethics in mind. By supporting the artisans of Chinchero, we help preserve ancient traditions, foster economic independence, and strengthen local communities. More importantly, we give these talented women a well-deserved opportunity to thrive.

Every trek booked with Kusa Treks contributes to this initiative, making our travelers not just visitors, but active participants in positive change. When you travel with us, you’re not only exploring the wonders of Peru—you’re making a lasting impact on the lives of those who call it home.

Join us in supporting the incredible women of Chinchero. Together, we can ensure that their skills, culture, and traditions continue to flourish for generations to come.
