Rainbow Mountain Day-Tour Itinerary

Our day will begin with an early-morning pick from Cusco at 04.00am. We'll commence on a 3.5 car drive in our private van passing through traditional villages to the trail head. At the trail head, we will stop and enjoy a hearty breakfast, prepared by our professional chef.

After breakfast, we will start the hike from Chillca located at 12,100ft. until we reach the famous Rainbow Mountain. The hike is approximately 4-hours long, and is a pretty tough gradual ascent. The high altitude makes this hike particularly difficult, but the incredible destination makes it all worth it!

During the hike, we will enjoy amazing views of the surrounding Andes, glacial peaks, red mountains, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas that graze in this valley. As you reach the summit of the mountain, you will be able to spot more Andean wildlife. This is one of the few places in the world where you can see wild Vicuñas (the Andean camel). Vicuñas are in the same family as llamas, although they are much smaller. Their wool is the most expensive wool in the world. One sweater made of Vicuña wool is more than $5,000!

Once we arrive at the top of Rainbow Mountain, you will have time to absorb the majesty of the colorful mountains that surround you. You will see amazing views of the valleys and Ausangate Glacier Peak in front of you. Ausangate is part of the Cordillera Vilcanota Range and is the tallest mountain of the Cusco region (just under 21,000ft. elevation). While taking in these magnificent views, our staff will bring you some hot drinks and share some information with you about the composition of these mountains and how they became striated in a rainbow of colors.

After taking a few amazing pictures and soaking in the views (perhaps we will even see a few condors floating on the air currents), we will begin our descent back to the trail head. This will be a 2 hour, downhill hike. We will then meet up with our professional chef and enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared, hot lunch.

After lunch, we will start our return trip back to the Chillca village, to catch our private van back to Cusco. We will drop you off at your hotel around 7 - 8 p.m.

Just got back a couple weeks ago from the 4 day LARES/INCA trail trek and had an absolutely amazing time! It ended up being a private tour with two other friends and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Michael, our contact back in the states, made planning effortless. He was always available for questions and made sure everything was ready to go once we arrived in Peru. Our guide, Eric, was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about everywhere we visited and could tell he was passionate and truly cared about everything he taught us. He was also great about maintaining a sustainable trekking pace since none of us were used to the altitude. Truly blown away by the food from our chef during the hike and all the hard work our porter did for us! Camp was always set up and ready to go once we arrived. Food was delicious! Overall would definitely recommend to anyone coming to Peru to use Kusa Treks! Only wish we had done our other tours through them as well!
