DETAILS FOR EACH DAY
DAY 1: CUSCO-CITY AND INCA RUINS
- Meals: Breakfast
- Accomodations: Hotel in Cusco
- Walking Time: 3-4 hours
AfternoonYou will meet your guide at you hotel between 12pm-1pm. Your tour will begin as you walk to Cusco's Plaza de Armas, which is a famous Catholic Cathedral, located in the heart of Cusco. Our tour will continue as we walk a little ways down the ancient cobble stone street, built by the Incas, to Coricancha (Q'oricancha), or the Temple of the Sun.
When it was built by the Incas, Coricancha's walls were once covered in 3 inches of solid cold, sadly the Spaniards that invaded Cusco removed the gold long-ago. However, the structure is still an incredible testament to the prodigious architecture and construction skills that the Incas used. This temple was the Spiritual Center and heart of the four quarters of the Inca Empire.
After our visit we'll walk down the Avenida El Sol, where we'll board a bus and take a 30 minute ride outside of the city to the Sacsayhuaman Inca archeological site, which was built using 200 ton boulders, formed into giant monoliths. After we've had our fill of Sacsayhuaman, we'll hop back on the bus for 5 minutes to reach the Q'inqu Inca site, where we'll learn about Incan sacrifice alters.
Our next stop is a 5-minute drive away, called Puca Pucara, a circular Incan archeological site, whose name derives from the red-color of the rocks that it is made of. Our final site for the day is Tambomachay, the Inca Water temple. Your guide will show you the incredible water fountains, used as a bath house nearly 600 years ago. After visiting Tambomachay, we'll board the bus and back to Cusco, where you will head to your hotel and prepare to tomorrow's adventures.
DAY 2: THE SACRED VALLEY - PISAQ MARKET AND OLLANTAYTAMBO
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
- Accomodations: Hotel in Aguas Calientes
- Walking Time: 5-6 hours
Our second day will start at your hotel at 8am. We'll take private transportation on a windy road through the mountains north of Cusco. About half-way through our bus ride, we'll stop at the El Mirador, or lookout point, which has an incredible view of the mountains and rivers that make up the Sacred Valley. Your guide will teach you a little Incan history and we'll be on our way.
Our next stop will be the Inca Písac Ruins, where we'll learn about Inca culture and see incredible works of art from stone. We'll also get our first taste of the famous Inca Terraces, which they used to grow all sorts of plants in the harsh mountain environment of the Andes.
After touring the ruins we'll head down the hill to the busy local market, where many textiles and hand crafted good will be available for inspection and purchase. We'll grab lunch at a local Písac restaurant, where you can taste some delicious and authentic Peruvian cuisine.
Following lunch, we'll get back on the road, which follows the Urubamba river towards Ollantaytambo, where we will stop and explore the ancient Incan ruins. There are stunning Inca constructed idols at this site, one of which represents the well-known Inca god of creation, Viracocha (Apu Qun Tiqsi Wiraqutra). You will receive a guided tour of these ruins.
Our next stop is the train station, where we'll take a 2-hour ride to Aguas Calientes, which is a city right below Machu Picchu. The trip to Aguas Calientes includes a breathtaking view of the Sacred Valley, including: glaciers, mountains, lush valleys, Incan terraces, rivers and much more. A Kusa Treks guide will meet you at the train station and take you to your hotel for the evening.
DAY 3: MACHU PICCHU!
- Meals: Breakfast
- Walking Time: 3-4 hours
It is entirely up to the group when you would like to start this exciting day! Today you will discover Machu Picchu, the world famous Sacred City of the Incas. The majority of travelers choose to wake up around 4:30AM, so that we can eat a quick breakfast and head over the bus station where we will catch the first bus from Aguas Calientes, drive 20 minutes to Machu Picchu, and arrive right when the gates open at 6AM as the sun is rising over the lost city. It is truly magical to experience a sunrise over these ruins, as the mists part and the city rises from the clouds stone by stone.
All of our guides have been to Machu Picchu well over 100 times and will lead you to the best places to view the ruins before the "crowds" arrive that day. Once the city begins to fill with more tourists we will start our walking, guided tour, which will start with impressive Temple of the Sun. We will see several iconic areas of Machu Picchu including: The Citadel, The Royal Tomb, the Main Plaza, the Condor Temple and much more.
After the guided tour you will have plenty of time to explore the City of the Clouds on your own; those who have secured permits to climb Huayna Picchu will do that hike at this time. If you chose not to hike Huayna Picchu you can join your guide on an hour long walk on the Inca Trail up to the Sun Gate, where you will enjoy a spectacular view of Machu Picchu.
The bus back to Aguas Calientes will depart between 2:30-3:00PM, we will enjoy a lunch together before you head to the train station to go back to Cusco. We usually book the 4:20PM train back to Ollantaytambo, where our private van will be waiting for you to take you the remaining 2-3 hours back to Cusco.
NOTE: If you are interested in taking the Vista Dome train back to Cusco, please let us know at your time of booking.

LARES & INCA TRAIL
Just got back a couple weeks ago from the 4 day LARES/INCA trail trek and had an absolutely amazing time! It ended up being a private tour with two other friends and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Michael, our contact back in the states, made planning effortless. He was always available for questions and made sure everything was ready to go once we arrived in Peru. Our guide, Eric, was fantastic! He was very knowledgeable about everywhere we visited and could tell he was passionate and truly cared about everything he taught us. He was also great about maintaining a sustainable trekking pace since none of us were used to the altitude. Truly blown away by the food from our chef during the hike and all the hard work our porter did for us! Camp was always set up and ready to go once we arrived. Food was delicious! Overall would definitely recommend to anyone coming to Peru to use Kusa Treks! Only wish we had done our other tours through them as well!
